Diploid watermelon harvests and evaluation 2020, Polyploidy watermelon Group, Zhengzhou Fruit Research Institute

The Diploid watermelon harvests and evaluation occurred on14 Jun 2020,A total of 114 diploid watermelon lines were evaluated.Following parameters were taken into account while evaluating watermelonyield, fruit size, production earliness, soluble solids, fruit shape and size, exterior and interior descriptions (rind pattern, length/width ration, seed trace size, occurrence of hard seeds, and flesh color), and flesh firmness and the organoleptic properties are evaluated by testing each fresh flesh sample from each watermelon. the measurements are determined according to the USDAstandards.Fruits were cut longitudinally into two halves. The number of hard seeds exposed on the cut surface were counted and recorded. Flesh firmness was recorded by using a Penetrometer FT 011 with an 8/11” plunger, and recorded in pounds. Samples were obtained by cutting the center of the fruit from the stem to the blossom end. Pressure was then taken in five areas of the fruit; stem end, top side, ground spot side, blossom end, and center. Flesh firmness was not taken on fruit with hollow heart. The flesh firmness is an average of the five values taken from five part and an average value taken for ten fruit per plot. Most of the quality measurements were taken at the first harvests.The total soluble solids were measured by using a handheld digital refractometer. Two measurements were counted as single value from each fruit, the shape, size and rind thickness of five fruits from each plot is measured with the help of digital measuring scale. The organoleptic quality is observed with the help of specially team (Mr. Lin Mao) and group members, a total of only 114 different diploid watermelon varieties were evaluated. Evaluation was carried according to farmers and consumer’s preferences. on the evaluation day the local community and farmers from different parts are specially invited to taste the watermelon fresh flesh, the farmers and consumers shared their valuable comments regarding the taste of watermelon which were valued by polyploidy watermelon team and principle investigator.
